Jim Smith Contracting started in 1959 performing small earthwork projects such as clearing and light excavating and digging farm ponds for local land owners.
Construction of Barkley Dam allowed Smith to venture into heavy construction, mainly performing grade and drain work.
Through the 1960's and early 1970's, Jim Smith Contracting continued to grow and perform highway grade and drain projects. In the early 1970's, the company expanded into the production and placement of asphalt for road construction and commercial construction projects.
In addition, the 1970's witnessed the company's venture into coal mining. This became a key part of our company's activities for more than a decade. By 1987, Smith was operating one of the most successful strip mining operations in the USA , and his operations were highly sought after by large corporations.
The 1980's and 1990's saw other successful ventures at Jim Smith Contracting. These included owning and operating a railroad, railroad shops, fuel and oil distribution, and a large hotel and convention center.
Today, Jim Smith Contracting is focused on Highway Construction, with primary interest in asphalt paving. Other major interests include commercial and private construction, as well as the startup of a limestone quarry.
Jim Smith Contracting currently has asphalt plant facilities in Grand Rivers, Hickory, Murray, and Paducah Kentucky .
